Nicholas B. Calcaterra, D.D.S.
Dr. Calcaterra received his dental degree Summa Cum Laude from the University at Buffalo (SUNY) School of Dental Medicine where he graduated first in his class of eighty-six dentists. In addition, he also received awards for achievement in periodontology and oral surgery. Dr. Calcaterra then completed a one year General Practice Residency at Saint Francis Hospital in Hartford at which he received extensive training in both oral surgery and anesthesia. At Saint Francis, he received the Gerard Keen Award given to the resident who demonstrated the greatest skills in oral surgery.
Dr. Calcaterra is well versed in all aspects of restorative dentistry including tooth colored fillings, crowns and bridges, root canals, and dental implant restorations. In addition to these procedures, he performs numerous oral surgery procedures in the office, including extracting impacted wisdom teeth. Leveraging his extensive training in anesthesia and sedation from Saint Francis, Dr. Calcaterra has also taken continuing education coursed in oral sedation dentistry. In oral sedation, a patient takes a prescribed dosage of an anti-anxiety medication that when combined with nitrous oxide ("laughing gas"), produces an extremely safe level of sedation in which the patient typically has little recollection of the procedure. Relying on this comprehensive background, he is able to remove wisdom teeth and perform other dental procedures with patients minimally - and safely - sedated.
Dr. Calcaterra grew up in Newton, Massachusetts but is now proud to call Connecticut home. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the Connecticut State Dental Association, and the Hartford Dental Society. He possesses basic Spanish conversational skills and enjoys speaking to patients with whom Spanish is their first language. When not practicing dentistry or attending continuing education courses, he can be found with his wife Dr. Carla Calcaterra D.D.S. in Newington either exercising at the gym or running outside.
