A silver amalgam filling is a type of restorative material designed to fill teeth that have been affected by cracks, dental decay, or other problems. The amalgam is actually a combination of multiple metals including silver, copper, zinc, and other materials.
After your tooth or teeth are completely numb, we will remove the decayed portion of the tooth and place the silver amalgam filling material. The material hardens over the next several hours.
As with nearly all dental restorations, amalgam fillings are not permanent. At some point in the future, the fillings and/or surrounding tooth structure may break down, and then require replacement. However, silver amalgam fillings are very durable and will often last many years.
Indications for silver amalgam fillings:
Breaks or cracks.
It is entirely normal to experience sensitivity to hot and cold after silver amalgam fillings are initially placed. This sensitivity will diminish over time after your tooth adjusts to the new silver filling.
